The Swan & Talbot's history…
This important posting Inn on the Great North Road had ample stabling
in coaching days from whence departed the carriers to Leeds. There was a
soldiers room under the eaves and a malt kiln in which they brewed their
own beer. This Inn was first licensed in 1678, giving it over 400 years
of history as a public house.
Frequently families of
social standing allowed a local inn to bear the family arms and so
considering the foregoing it is possible that what local people
called the Dog and Swan, bore the Arms of the Swann family before 1611.
The
family spelt their surname Swann but the first baronet spelt
it as Swan, which is a tradition that has carried through to today.
The name was changed from The Dog & Swan to The Swan & Talbot. A talbot
is a dog – a Talbot Hound – bought into the country in the 11th century.
The breed is now extinct but the modern day beagle is its closest ancestor. |
